NYC Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)
The purpose of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is to provide New York City youth, between the ages of 14 through 21, with summer employment and educational experiences that build on their individual strengths and incorporate youth development principles. These principles include engaging the talents and interests of youth, developing their skills and competencies, and providing positive adult role models.
The SYEP experience introduces youth to the workplace, imparts valuable employment skills, and provides youth with a summer income. SYEP educational activities enhance this exposure to the world of work, allowing youth to gain the self-confidence, career awareness, financial literacy, and interpersonal competencies needed to succeed over the long term.
The goal of the SYEP program is to provide youth with valuable summer employment experiences within a youth-development approach. SYEP is more than a job placement program - it incorporates the core elements of successful youth-development programming including: adult support and guidance, engaging activities, and input from youth.
SYEP assists youth in making a successful transition to healthy adulthood and economic independence.
The objectives of the Summer Youth Employment Program are:
- to provide an employment experience that stresses the development and practice of real world labor expectations;
- to bring greater awareness of the various support networks and programs available at community-based organizations (CBOs);
- to provide opportunities for career instruction, financial literacy training and various academic and social supports.
